Sarkle Original: From the classic to the up-to-date, some of the great TV franchises are gearing up for new DVD releases. Here are our top five picks for the next month.

Please note that some of these DVD releases are Region 1 – you will need a compatible multi-region DVD player, or, if you are playing the discs on your computer, a region-free program like AnyDVD.

  1. Hogan’s Heroes: Season 1 – July 31
This classic comedy, set in a prisoner of war camp during World War II, has stood the test of time surprisingly well. Colonel Robert Hogan (Bob Crane) operates an escape and sabotage unit right under the nose of the Germans, headed by bumbling Colonel Wilhelm Klink (Werner Klemperer). Actually, if real Hogan’s Heroes fanatic and can’t wait for all the seasons to come to Region 4, then you can grab the complete set from Amazon.com for just US$120.

  2. M*A*S*H: The 4077 Collection – August 6
The critically acclaimed, multi-award winning 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, a comedy/drama about a US Army medical unit during the Korean War, has to be one of the best television series of all time. Variously funny, sad, serious and everything in between, M*A*S*H is a must-have TV series. This feature-packed box set contains the original feature film and the entire TV series that came afterwards, all 251 episodes of it.

  3. The Chaser’s War on Everything: Season 2, Part 2 – August 7
The Chaser is a uniquely Australian comedy team that over the years has pulled some hilarious stunts. Their crowning achievement, an invasion of the APEC restricted zone while masquerading as Canadian diplomats, made headlines around the world, and is recorded for posterity in this 2-DVD set, along with 10 more episodes of side-splitting comedy.

  4. House, M.D.: Season 4 – August 20
Although shortened by the Hollywood writers’ strike, the fourth season of the Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning medical drama is still great TV. Season 4 introduces a host of new characters, but still revolves around the enigmatic and antisocial diagnostic specialist Dr Gregory House (Hugh Laurie), one of the most fascinating television characters ever.

  5. Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS): Season 5 – August 26
That’s right – season 5, which has yet to air in Australia, becomes available in America at the end of August. After the attempts in season 4 to build multi-episode arcs, NCIS Season 5 returns to its roots and, if the US reviews are anything to go by, returns to form. Headed by NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), the crack team of investigators tackles the most baffling navy cases with a blend of forensics, technology and good old-fashioned instincts. If you haven’t been playing along, Amazon also have Seasons 1-4 available at a great price.
