Government heading for trouble in Senate
Aug 19th, 2008 | By David Harper | Category: Australia, Lead StoriesAustralian Broadcasting Corporation: The Federal Opposition has decided to block some of the Government’s key Budget measures including the increased tax on luxury cars, the proposed increase to the Medicare surcharge threshold and the tax on pre-mixed drinks.
It is a sign of the looming battle in the changed Senate where the Government will need either the Opposition’s support or the votes of five Greens senators, Independent Senator Nick Xenophon and Family First Senator Steve Fielding to pass legislation.
