New order in the house

The Age: Peter Kavanagh’s tie is a bold yellow, but otherwise unremarkable. And yet his fellow MPs, Labor and Coalition types who need his vote in the Victorian upper house, love it. “You know,” he says over a coffee at Parliament, “I’ve had 20 comments on this tie today.”

Whatever they say behind his back, in the two years since his out-of-the-blue election to the Legislative Council, other politicians have been very pleasant to Peter Kavanagh. Even better, says the Democratic Labor Party representative with a smile, “suddenly my jokes are funny”.
