Truancy penalty plan upsets Labor MPs

The Australian: Kevin Rudd faced a backbench revolt today as Labor MPs challenged the Government’s new laws to cut welfare payments to families where children repeatedly miss school.

Backbenchers also moved to bring on a caucus debate over the Government’s intention to retain a controversial construction industry watchdog until 2010.
