No shortage of work

The Australian Editorial: Indigenous leader Warren Mundine’s frustration that unfilled fruit-picking jobs will go to guest workers from the South Pacific while Aborigines are unemployed is understandable.

Indigenous unemployment currently stands at about 14 per cent, but in many remote areas and some outer metropolitan areas it is much higher. The labour-shortage crisis in rural Australia, however, is such that guest workers on short-term visas will not deprive Australians of work.
