O’Farrell won’t do a Debnam

Imre Salusinszky: Everything was going the Coalition’s way back in November, 2006. NSW Opposition Leader Peter Debnam was competitive with Premier Morris Iemma in the polls and former NSW Aboriginal affairs minister Milton Orkopoulos had just been charged with 30 child-sex and drug offences.

Miraculously, Debnam managed to turn the Orkopoulos scandal into a win for Iemma, by attempting to widen the scandal to include former NSW attorney-general (and now federal Home Affairs Minister) Bob Debus. The flimsy allegations against Debus had percolated up from the murky imaginings of some of the most devoted conspiracy theorists in the Liberal Party.
