The Liberals’ magic numbers

Paul Austin: Thirteen seats. If you say it quickly, it doesn’t sound too big. Thirteen is the lucky number for the Victorian Liberals. That’s how many seats they have to take from Labor to win the next state election.

It’s actually a huge task. The Liberals hold only 23 seats in the 88-member lower house. It is true that, courtesy of the coalition deal the Libs struck in February with their country cousins, they are now entitled to add on the nine seats held by the Nationals. But that still leaves 13 to get to the magic majority of 45 seats.
