Gerard Henderson: Just three days after his stunning victory in the Lyne byelection on the NSW mid North Coast, Rob Oakeshott has already become one of the best-known MPs in Canberra. This is a status he shares with the two other independent MPs, Bob Katter and Tony Windsor, along with the key players in the ALP, the Coalition and the Greens plus a few media-focused mavericks.

The problem for the electors of Lyne is that the high profile of the local independent parliamentarian will not necessarily translate into real political achievement.
