Indecision rules again

Dennis Shanahan: On July 10, 2006, at the timber-and-leather finished government offices in 70 Phillip St, Sydney, John Howard and Peter Costello faced off in a private meeting just after 2pm.

The then prime minister and treasurer were having a “four eyes” meeting to settle the Liberal leadership after a tense cabinet meeting and days of public acrimony. The crisis had developed after weeks of speculation that a deal to switch the leadership from Howard to Costello existed but had not been honoured.
