Calm leaders for a financial crisis

Peter Hartcher: Only a couple of hours before calling a leadership ballot on Monday, Brendan Nelson’s chief of staff, Peter Hendy, and Nelson’s chief supporter, Nick Minchin, sat in a meeting of the Liberal Party’s policy review committee.

At the table with them sat Malcolm Turnbull. For several days Nelson, Hendy and Minchin had been planning a pre-emptive strike on Turnbull. The shadow treasurer had been on a week-long holiday in Italy. He returned to Australia early on Monday.
