Opponents of the proposed same-sex marriage ban worry that many black voters, enthused by Senator Barack Obama’s candidacy but traditionally conservative on issues involving homosexuality, could pour into voting stations in record numbers to punch the Obama ticket — and then cast a vote for the marriage ban.

Peter Costello may well leave parliament soon and take a job outside politics. Alternatively, the addiction to politics that has driven him to the heights of federal politics, implementing policies as Treasurer for more than a decade and assailing his Labor opponents for 18 years may yet prevail. For so long as Costello remains on the backbench, it pays to heed history. And history records plenty of future leaders who prematurely write their political obituaries.

A burglar who broke into a home just east of Fresno rubbed spices over the body of one of two men as they slept in their rooms and then used an 8-inch sausage to whack the other man in the face and head before he ran out the house, Fresno County sheriff’s deputies said Saturday.

Back home in Georgia after claiming to have found the legendery Bigfoot, Rick Dyer and Matthew Whitton told two Atlanta TV stations Wednesday that the entire affair was a “joke” that got out of hand. The men admitted they bought the Sasquatch suit over the Internet, and showed WSB-TV’s Mark Winne a Web page at TheHorrorDome.Com selling it.

The pair of amateur hunters, who reportedly operate a Bigfoot tracking business, will present “DNA evidence and photo evidence of the creature” at the news conference in California today. Photographs already released show a large ape-like animal crammed into a freezer, where it was being preserved.

Many of the social measures on the ballots are being pushed by evangelical groups that hope to force Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, to pay closer attention to their agenda. The proposals that are likely to attract the most attention are same-sex marriage and abortion amendments, along with proposals to ban affirmative action.

Three days after their marriage, Theresa Ramirez filed for divorce, court records show. The court petition says there were “irreconcilable differences” between Ramirez and her partner. The case is one of the first divorces petitions since California legalized same-sex marriage.
