Brown fights for job as turmoil mounts

Gordon Brown’s centre-left Labour Party trails David Cameron’s resurgent Conservatives by 17 percentage points, according to a poll yesterday. About 54 per cent of Labour activists want someone other than Mr Brown as leader for the next general election, which must be held by mid-2010, according to a newspaper poll yesterday.

Beleaguered British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, keen for a fillip from his country’s sporting successes in Beijing, has instead been swamped by more bad news and poor polling. A survey published on Sunday put support for Mr. Brown’s Labour Party at 25%, compared with the opposition Conservatives’ 46%.
