Government backs Keelty

Commissioner Keelty has been criticised over the AFP’s handling of the investigation into Dr Haneef, the Indian-born hospital registrar cleared of involvement in an Islamist attack in the United Kingdom. Attorney-General Robert McClelland responded, saying: “Commissioner Keelty has the faith and support of the government.”

Mohamed Haneef’s lawyers have called for the Australian Federal Police brief to the inquiry into their client’s detention to be made public come after yesterday’s revelation that the AFP ignored the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation in regard to the doctor.

ASIO told the inquiry that it provided its assessment on Dr Haneef in writing to then attorney-general Philip Ruddock. However, it is understood the assessment was not passed on to then immigration minister Kevin Andrews, who was heavily criticised after he cancelled Dr Haneef’s visa on the strength of information supplied to him by the Australian Federal Police.
