While some of the Rudd Government’s changes to Australia’s immigration policy may be able to be introduced by regulation, the rest will require the passage of laws in the Senate. The Greens are likely to support the changes but the support of Family First is unclear.



Detention centres to be last resort under new immigration policy

The Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, said today that under Labor’s new policy detention, Immigration Detention Centres will only be used as a last resort and for the shortest practicable time. “A person who poses no danger to the community will be able to remain in the community while their visa status is resolved,” Senator Evans said.

Could someone point out to me where, in last year’s election campaign, Kevin Rudd or his Labor cohorts announced they were going to commit Australia to a gang-busters immigration program - increasing the population by a million people every three years?
