Today’s discussion paper will increase the pressure on the Rudd Government to consider calls by seniors groups for a $30-a-week lift in the singles payment, at a “conservative” estimated cost of $1 billion a year. The Treasurer, Wayne Swan, has fuelled speculation that the Government will act on the aged pension, conceding pensioners are “doing it tough”.

The industry is concerned that the Government’s proposed emissions trading scheme makes no provision for emissions from the more than $60billion of proposed new natural gas projects, putting that investment in doubt, even though gas usually replaces far dirtier fossil fuels in the countries to which it is exported.



Reserve Bank lays ground for cut in interest rates

Following yesterday’s board meeting, Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens announced the bank’s new position in a prepared statement. “The board’s view is that scope to move towards a less restrictive stance of monetary policy in the period ahead is increasing,” it read.
