Thaksin relative Somchai Wongsawat to be new Thai PM

Mr Somchai, 61, will not take office until he is endorsed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a process that could take several days. However, anti-government protesters who have occupied the grounds of the prime minister’s offices for three weeks have already vowed to continue their rally to force Mr Somchai from power.

Samak Sundaravej accused the protesters who have besieged his official compound of trying to subvert the rule of law, saying the so-called People’s Alliance for Democracy should not be allowed to overthrow his popularly-elected government. Mr Samak also said he had accepted the resignation of his foreign minister, Tej Bunnag.

Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej had previously said he would not use force to push out thousands of protesters who have occupied the main government complex since last week, but after the worst street clashes in more than a decade said it was now time for them to go. “I did it to solve the problems of the country,” Mr Samak said in a televised news conference. “Because the situation turned out this way, I had no other choice.”

Thai court urged to disband ruling party

Thailand’s Election Commission has recommended the Supreme Court disband the Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej’s People Power Party (PPP) for election fraud. It was a unanimous vote by the five-member commission, which found the PPP guilty of buying votes during last December’s general election.

Thai ex-premier’s wife gets jail for tax evasion

It is the first ruling against the family of telecommunications tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra’s family since the 2006 military coup that toppled him from power. The military junta has long alleged that Mr Thaksin and his family engaged in corrupt practices during his time in office.
